Atlantic University Parapsychology Conference in October 2011



I'll be speaking at this conference along with Julie Beischel from the Windbridge Institute, Ed May of the Laboratories for Fundamental Research, Roger Nelson of the Global Consciousness Project, and other notables including Doug Richards, Carlos Alvarado, Christine Simmonds-Moore, Nancy Zingrone,  Henry Reed, John Palmer, James Carpenter, Robert Van de Castle, Ginette Nachman, Frank Pasciuti, Loyd Auerbach, David McMillin, and Stephen Braude.

In other news. Unfortunately, Nancy Zingrone and her colleagues' proposal to start a Masters of Arts in Parapsychology program at Atlantic University was rejected.

Yes, and all the more unfortunate given that anyone who attends the AU conference will find that it is just as scholarly as any program you are likely to find at any top-rated university in the world. The only difference is the nature of the topic, which isn't supposed to be a consideration in academia, but of course it is.

A bit off topic, but Dean, apart from Dick Bierman in the Netherlands, do you know of anyone else in Europe that is active within experimental psi-related research and has a physical science background (physics or chemistry)?

Indeed, a professor that has read my application to a Ph.D program now laugh as soon as he see me.
There is however no bad feelings between us, he just seem to think that I am "amusing but deluded"

Walter von Lucadou. Bernard Carr and and Brian Josephson also, but they aren't active experimentalists.

Jens Aage Tellefsen at Kungliga Tekniska högskolan in Stockholm has a background in physics and is interested in parapsychological research.

This is such distressing news! I just completed Principles of Parapsychology with the thought it would be the foundation of a degree in Parapsychology. So, now it looks like I'll be back looking at Transpersonal Psych again.

Feeling the future meta-analysis

Before Cornell University psychologist Daryl Bem published an article on precognition in the prominent  Journal of Social and Personality Psychology, it had already (and ironically given the topic) evoked a response from the status quo. The New York Times  was kind enough to  prepare us to be outraged .  It was called " craziness, pure craziness" by life-long critic Ray Hyman. Within days the news media was announcing that it was all just a big mistake .  I wrote about the ensuing brouhaha  in this blog .  But the bottom line in science, and the key factor that trumps hysterical criticism, is whether the claimed effect can be repeated by independent investigators. Show me the evidence

Critics are fond of saying that there is no scientific evidence for psi. They wave their fist in the air and shout, "Show me the evidence!" Then they turn red and have a coughing fit. In less dramatic cases a student  might be genuinely curious and open-minded, but unsure where to begin to find reliable evidence about psi. Google knows all and sees all, but it doesn't know how to interpret or evaluate what it knows (at least not yet). In the past, my response to the "show me" challenge has been to give the titles of a few books to read, point to the bibliographies in those books, and advise the person to do their homework. I still think that this is the best approach for a beginner tackling a complex topic. But given the growing expectation that information on  virtually any topic ought to be available online within 60 seconds, traditional methods of scholarship are disappearing fast.
